[This entry is from my 1976 handwritten diary. On October 26, 2012 I posted this to my blog and I added the bracketed language, including this comment, and also the photograph, which is recent, not from the 1970s. Thank you to Flickr user Pavan Kunder for permission under a Creative Commons license to use the picture. I was in 7th grade when I wrote this journal entry. I typed this post as I wrote it, including the mistakes, so you can see how I wrote back then. Keep in mind this is my private diary, and I’m sure I could have written with fewer errors had I known I would be showing it to the world years later. On March 30, 1976 my family moved from Chicago, Illinois, USA to Amsterdam, Netherlands for about four months. I wrote in my diary frequently during that time, and I plan to post all the entries to this blog. To my knowledge, we did not have an English dictionary with us in Amsterdam.]

I went to school again as usuall. I wrote a letter to My class in chicago. it was a little more than 1 page. I hope they like it. I told all about the boys, the house, everything.

One 2 more days of school till we get out for a 10 day vacation. I am going to ask mom about painting some eggs for easter.

I took my math book to school and did a few exercizes.

Last night the burglar alarm to our house went of, Andy thought it was a bumble bee in his dream.

The people tried to turn it off with the key but it didn’t work I guess it finally just went off. They didn’t even call the police when it happened!

Today [Monday] was sort of a boring day nothing exciting happened. I went to school. One sort of exciting thing happened at school. I wrote a paper about the 2 boys [that were part of the Dutch family my family and I lived with during our stay in Amsterdam], I showed it to the teacher and he made me copy it over to put it in the school newspaper

I forgot to say yesterday was palm sunday. but we didn’t go to church or anything.

I finished the book the ‘baterdays’ that have have been reading, it was good.

One sort of stupid thing I did today was say that I miss my clarinet, I even cried.

Dad went to groninhen today.

We spent most of the day in delft, Aprox 8 hours. It was fun. We saw 2 churches, I took pictures of both. We saw a thing that was sort of a fort. It had gun holes, a moat and draw bridge, the works. We looked at lots of Delft potery Andy and I both bought a small Delft plack that had a windmel on each.

We took a trian there, It cost 48 guilders for round trip. Each way it took about half an hour. It seems sort of expensive to me.

Mom hates me for talking about money all the time, so she would like me to stop. She will give me 100 guilders if I do I’ll think $37.00 I’ll try it.

We went sightseeing and sovenier shoping museium watching, down town today. We went and lookeded at the Van gogh museum.

Andy looked at every picture in the museum, but it was a small museum. I looked at almost all of them. I took some pictures, and I bought 1 slid and 4 postcards.

Andy and I both bought a matchbox car. They are a little cheaper here than in Chicago. Andy got a racing car, I got a Mini Morris Miner.

We might go to Delft tomarow for a trip. It’s supposed to be a good place to go for sightseeing.

Mom and Dad went to meat Mr. Aketson at 6:30.They saw a play then ate dinner, everything and came home at 10:30 pm. We had to clean up so Mr. Aketson can sleep over night here.

This is the 100th day of this bicentenial year. The family didn’t think about it this way but we celibrated the hundreth day of the year by going to eat out at an indonizian resterant. It was pretty good. Andy and I both ordered the same thing, (Chicken with noddels, an egg roll, coffie, and sharksfin soep. The sharksfin soep tastes like warm uncoked eeg white. I only ate half of it.

Theres one thing I would like to remember about Holland, there are so many plants. I want to talk mainly about school. There are somany different plants and RABBITS. There are 2 or three rabit cages in just one hall way. there are four or five cages in our class room alone. there must be 40 or 50 Rabbits in the whole school. I am going to get a plant for my desk at school.

This was my forth day of school. I only said a few words to Andrea (American girl) and I moved my seat over to a boy section instead of a girls section.

I’ve got the job of washing the dishes at home. I am charging a lot cheaper now at home. I charge $1:00 to wash dishes and empty the dish washer. I only charge 1 guilder (37 cents) here and I have to do the dishes by hand.

so that means I get 17 guilders a week (I work 2 times a day 7 days a week plus my 3 guilder alowence.

I am getting used to going to school now. I can to the work so easily and fast I hope I get switched to a higher grade.

Today was our first day of school. We (Andy and I) went to a Montesorie school. The idea of it is that insted of the whole class doing the same thing, you do any subject you want to.

I have a man teacher. He speaks a little english and it helps. There is an American speaking girl in my class. Shes sort of nice. I don’t want to get to know her to well because Andy kids me about her.

I got some flash cards and the girl (Im not sure of her name) qwized me. I could go through them fast in the end. So I know some more words. I don’t think Ill get any homework at school because I don’t spech dutch. I don’t like school to much.

1 more day until school starts for me.

Theres one think I hate to find out. That’s when you find out when your best friends do bad things. I really hate it. It usually bothers me for a long time.

I found out that Oscar and Arnold drink wine. I saw them today in the living room, (with their Mother and father) drinking wine. I told mom about it and it helped chear me up. because I was sad.

We (Oscar, Arnold and there father) went on a trip to there small house, about a 45 min ride by car. We all worked to cut, chop and saw up the trees that fell from a big storm. the boys father had an gas chain saw, and us boys used axes and hatchets.

It was fun, we got dirty. It took most of the day (11:00 til 6:15)
