The 100th day of the United States Bicentennial – 1976
[This entry is from my 1976 handwritten diary. On October 26, 2012 I posted this to my blog and I added this bracketed language and also the photograph, which is recent, not from the 1970s. Thank you to Flickr user _dChris for permission via a Creative Commons license to use the picture. I was in 7th grade when I wrote this journal entry. I typed this post as I wrote it, including the mistakes, so you can see how I wrote back then. Keep in mind this is my private diary, and I’m sure I could have written with fewer errors had I known I would be showing it to the world years later. On March 30, 1976 my family moved from Chicago, Illinois, USA to Amsterdam, Netherlands for about four months. I wrote in my diary frequently during that time, and I plan to post all the entries to this blog. To my knowledge, we did not have an English dictionary with us in Amsterdam.]
This is the 100th day of this bicentenial year. The family didn’t think about it this way but we celibrated the hundreth day of the year by going to eat out at an indonizian resterant. It was pretty good. Andy and I both ordered the same thing, (Chicken with noddels, an egg roll, coffie, and sharksfin soep. The sharksfin soep tastes like warm uncoked eeg white. I only ate half of it.
Theres one thing I would like to remember about Holland, there are so many plants. I want to talk mainly about school. There are somany different plants and RABBITS. There are 2 or three rabit cages in just one hall way. there are four or five cages in our class room alone. there must be 40 or 50 Rabbits in the whole school. I am going to get a plant for my desk at school.

The American girl is really triing to be my friend, but don’t want to very much. Her name is Andrea. It sounds like a boy but it isn’t.

Andy and I are going to get bikes soon so that we can ride to school because it cost Andy 1 guilder per day and 2 guilders per day for me.

In particular, I want to visit this school if it still exists.]
Today was our first day of school. We (Andy and I) went to a Montesorie school. The idea of it is that insted of the whole class doing the same thing, you do any subject you want to.
I have a man teacher. He speaks a little english and it helps. There is an American speaking girl in my class. Shes sort of nice. I don’t want to get to know her to well because Andy kids me about her.
I got some flash cards and the girl (Im not sure of her name) qwized me. I could go through them fast in the end. So I know some more words. I don’t think Ill get any homework at school because I don’t spech dutch. I don’t like school to much.

Theres one think I hate to find out. That’s when you find out when your best friends do bad things. I really hate it. It usually bothers me for a long time.
I found out that Oscar and Arnold drink wine. I saw them today in the living room, (with their Mother and father) drinking wine. I told mom about it and it helped chear me up. because I was sad.
We (Oscar, Arnold and there father) went on a trip to there small house, about a 45 min ride by car. We all worked to cut, chop and saw up the trees that fell from a big storm. the boys father had an gas chain saw, and us boys used axes and hatchets.
It was fun, we got dirty. It took most of the day (11:00 til 6:15)

We haven’t gotten bikes yet. I hope we get them next week.
Dad’s leaving on monday to go to groningen, he’s going to work there. He expects to work there 2 or 3 days a week. I guess he will take the train. I think he will come back on Wednesday.
We are going to go to scoll on monday. We go for 5 days and then we have easter vacation for a week.
We took our first tram today. It Andy’s and I first time, I don’t know about Mom and Dad. It wasn’t to exciting.
There was a spider in our room today. so naturally I am scared. When Andy saw it he screamed. I wouldn’t be so scared of it if I didn’t have the lower bunk on the bed (the bunk is aprox 3 in from ground
We meet our hosts and visit the Rijksmuseum

Today was fun. We got to now the two boys who are the sons of our landlady who is living with us. I think we are going to have a lot of fun together and learn some dutch.
We took a trip around Amsterdam, that included a trip to the Rijks museum. It was sort of interesting to go there, and we got some postcards and some slides. Since I am going to make a slide show I want to buy some slides to put in my show.
The 2 boys (Arnold and Oscar) both speak dutch and a little english and we speak english and 1 or 2 words of dutch, but we can communicate most of the time.
The house is nice and we (Andy and I) have a bunk bed. There is a canal outside and a canoe to ride. We haven’t riden the canoe but we might ride it tomorow.
We arrive at our house in Amsterdam

This isn’t very important but I still wan’t to say it, “It’s April fools day” but since wer’re not in scoll, I didn’t notice it at all. Andy and I didn’t even prank any jokes on Andy!
Finaly, we are here in our house in Holland. Man, since tuesday, March 30th all the way till this afternoon, Yes, it took that long a time. first, (back at home, just when it’s time to go the cab we ordered came about 30 min. after we called, (but that doesn’t make any difference, because we were already 2 hours early, and had to wait.
When we finally get on the plane, at 9:45 or so, we find out that we have dinner a 12:00 midnight well we finally get of plane and get a cab to the train station we take a train from luxembourg to Amsterdam in 8 hours.
Then we find a cab and go to our house, It’s nice, I’ll tell you about it tomorrow.

We ended the airplane trip today. But before we got to Luxembourg we got off at Iceland, (we stayed about 45 minutes) I bought a small coin collection. It cost me $1.20 and it included six coins, all wraped in a vinal raper. We took a train to Brussels, so I am righting this in a Hotel. It has a strange elevator in it, it dosn’t have sliding doors, like all the others I have scean, but it has a door that opens just like my house door. We went out for dinner, I had half of a roasted chicken, (it was good) Andy had the same.
I liked the airplane ride, and just think, we have to wait about 4 more months before we go back home on one.
I wrote to Michael Ruddat on the airplane I will send it to him tomorrow.
I am moving today from Chicago to Amsterdam

We got off the ground (runway I mean at 10 minutes to 10pm.
Today is the big day. WE ARE GOING TO HOLLAND. I am writing this diary on the airplane, it’s a DC8! I don’t like it very much because it is so small. We left home at aprox 5:00 o’clock pm and we got on the plane at aprox 9:45pm. Before we got on the plane we had a little bit of food to eat, Andy and I split a hamburger. It wasn’t very much. We are supposed to have dinner on the plane, but that will be at aprox 11:45pm (a little late I think.) Even with taking time out for dinner we still had to wait an hour or so. But mom bought us some snoppy [Snoopy] books so the time went by fast reading those, (I finished more than half)
Well, I think I felt sort of big while I was carrying around all my camera equipment and my camera, I was sort of scared that my camera bag would set off the mettle detector, but, it didn’t.
At the moment I am sitting in the airplane writing (10:30pm) for the lady to bring the soda pop (she’s almost here)
We expect to be in Iceland at 3:15am and get to Holland some time tomorrow.
