I got a blue bicycle today in Amsterdam
[This entry is from Wednesday, April 15, 1976 in handwritten diary. On March 12, 2013 I posted this to my blog and I added the bracketed language, including this comment, and also the photograph, which is recent, not from the 1970s. I typed this post as I wrote it, including the mistakes, so you can see how I wrote back then. Keep in mind this is my private diary, and I’m sure I could have written with fewer errors had I known I would be showing it to the world years later. On March 30, 1976 my family moved from Chicago, Illinois, USA to Amsterdam, The Netherlands for about four months. I wrote in my diary frequently during that time, and I plan to post all the entries to this blog. To my knowledge, we did not have an English dictionary with us in Amsterdam. The address of the house we lived in in Amsterdam was De Cuserstraat 19, Amsterdam, Buitenveldert, The Netherlands.]
I got my bike today. It’s blue, and second hand. I am washing it up. but it is hard work because it is very dirty. It has hand brakes that are very strong. It cost 120 guilders about 44 $. It works good. But the lighting system needs some work though. Today was the last day of school till vacation starts for easter. I wrote a letter to Michael Ruddat (my best friend) I will send it to him tomorrow or the next day.
I don’t know if I’ve ever said this before in thus diary but I have a new years resolution not to eat candy for a year this is my second year and I haven’t broken it yet!

Today is the day we get out early at school. We are going to get bikes tomarow. I am glad.
We rode Arnolds and Oscars conoe today. It was sort of mixed up fun. We kept turning around when we didn’t want to. But when Andy and I were taking the boat out of the water I stuck my foot in and my shoe and every thing was wet all the way up to my knee! It was a funny thing to tell mom Dad came home today from gronenen where he works 3 days a week and I told him too. He bought us some of the things that you turn over and snow comes down (like this [picture of a snow globe that I drew in the diary])
I am getting rough hands so mom says I can’t do dishes any more.

One 2 more days of school till we get out for a 10 day vacation. I am going to ask mom about painting some eggs for easter.
I took my math book to school and did a few exercizes.
Last night the burglar alarm to our house went of, Andy thought it was a bumble bee in his dream.
The people tried to turn it off with the key but it didn’t work I guess it finally just went off. They didn’t even call the police when it happened!

I finished the book the ‘baterdays’ that have have been reading, it was good.
One sort of stupid thing I did today was say that I miss my clarinet, I even cried.

We spent most of the day in delft, Aprox 8 hours. It was fun. We saw 2 churches, I took pictures of both. We saw a thing that was sort of a fort. It had gun holes, a moat and draw bridge, the works. We looked at lots of Delft potery Andy and I both bought a small Delft plack that had a windmel on each.
We took a trian there, It cost 48 guilders for round trip. Each way it took about half an hour. It seems sort of expensive to me.
Mom hates me for talking about money all the time, so she would like me to stop. She will give me 100 guilders if I do I’ll think $37.00 I’ll try it.

This is the 100th day of this bicentenial year. The family didn’t think about it this way but we celibrated the hundreth day of the year by going to eat out at an indonizian resterant. It was pretty good. Andy and I both ordered the same thing, (Chicken with noddels, an egg roll, coffie, and sharksfin soep. The sharksfin soep tastes like warm uncoked eeg white. I only ate half of it.
Theres one thing I would like to remember about Holland, there are so many plants. I want to talk mainly about school. There are somany different plants and RABBITS. There are 2 or three rabit cages in just one hall way. there are four or five cages in our class room alone. there must be 40 or 50 Rabbits in the whole school. I am going to get a plant for my desk at school.

This was my forth day of school. I only said a few words to Andrea (American girl) and I moved my seat over to a boy section instead of a girls section.
I’ve got the job of washing the dishes at home. I am charging a lot cheaper now at home. I charge $1:00 to wash dishes and empty the dish washer. I only charge 1 guilder (37 cents) here and I have to do the dishes by hand.
so that means I get 17 guilders a week (I work 2 times a day 7 days a week plus my 3 guilder alowence.
I am getting used to going to school now. I can to the work so easily and fast I hope I get switched to a higher grade.

The American girl is really triing to be my friend, but don’t want to very much. Her name is Andrea. It sounds like a boy but it isn’t.
I know the flash cards the flash cards that Andrea made when she first came to this school by hart. But thats only the first side of them I have to do the other side tomorow.
Andy and I are going to get bikes soon so that we can ride to school because it cost Andy 1 guilder per day and 2 guilders per day for me.
